The New Mexico Children, Youth & Families Department (CYFD) is a great place to get information about adoption in New Mexico. Families can visit their online web site to read the Adoption Guidebook, view available children looking for homes, email questions, request additional information, and print the Adoption Application Form.

Children available for adoption through CYFD may have physical, emotional, or behavioral challenges. CYFD does not charge adoption fees for children in their custody, however, there are fees that are required to finalize the adoption, such as attorney fees. These fees can be paid through financial aid for children who qualify. Children qualify for financial assistance based on their challenges or special needs. Children over five years of age, from a minority heritage, having special needs, or part of a sibling group will most likely qualify. Also, children with pre-existing conditions or needing to see a psychologist, may be able to get Medicaid to help with cost.

Potential families will need to attend an orientation program, complete an application, provide personal references, get finger printed, have a background check done, attend twenty seven hours of training, have a medical done, be over twenty one years of age, have bedroom space for the child to be adopted, and get a home study done by an approved social worker.

Adoptive families who want to adopt a newborn or a younger child can contact an adoption agency. Agencies can help families get approved to adopt a child in New Mexico, in another state or even another country.

The agency will require several fees for their services, including: an application fee, match fee, attorney fees, counseling fees, additional agency fees and other fees that the birth mother may need.

Domestic Adoptions are when an agency works to match a potential adoptive family with a birth mother who has created an adoption plan for her child. International Adoptions are when agencies work with orphanages, attorneys, and facilitators in other countries, to find an infant who needs and adoptive home.
